About me

Now, this is a story all about how my life got flipped-turned upside down, and I'd like to take a minute...

Profile photo of myself, Andrew Gatenby

I am a full-stack software engineer, based in the UK, with 20 years experience of development within an e-commerce focus.

Having worked in both in-house and external agency focused roles, as well as a product-led SaaS platform environment, I have experience across key perspectives and decision-making positions. My aim is always to build the best experience possible - both for users and other developers. Pushing to adhere to technical conventions such as SOLID principles, clear separation of responsibilities across code & applications, through to embedded quality assurance, clear documentation and robustness.

My favourite tech stack is always evolving and changing, but PHP & Laravel feature heavily; along with AstroJS, Tailwind and being comfortable with both React and VueJS. Coupled with DevOps skills and experience with virtualisation, containerisation and infrastructure as code. This is why I use the term "full stack"!

As well as the base technologies, I'm well versed and experienced with various off-the-shelf, open source and commercial systems - Wordpress, Shopify, Shopify app development etc. In addition to the Visualsoft e-commerce platform & ecosystem, VS3, that I'd worked on for 15-16 years. A lot of my current work is bringing the powerful features developed here, to the wider Shopify ecosystem via app development projects.

This is my first personal website in around 15 years, which I'm planning on using as a channel to put together some overdue articles, blog posts, case studies etc. from my experiences in the last 20 years. It's not to say that there'll be industry-defining content, but I'd appreciate if you want to call back later.
